ODYSEA

Homer's Odyssey is the oldest surviving European epic. Yet we still do not know who Homer was — or whether he existed at all; who Odysseus was — or whether he existed at all. The sources diverge and contradict one another.

For centuries, the arduous return of the king of Ithaca from the ravaged and burned city of Troy was considered a fictional story woven from words — at least until Heinrich Schliemann unearthed the material ruins of Troy from the sand.
