About the Production
This stage adaptation of Thomas Mann's novel Doctor Faustus brings into dialogue the concepts of twelve-tone composition developed by Arnold Schönberg and Josef Matthias Hauer. A group of contemporary witnesses attempts to reconstruct the past and death of the composer Adrian Leverkühn — a genius whose musical radicalism stands in tension with his moral downfall.
The production explores whether art can be judged through categories of good and evil, and to what extent one can comprehend that which exceeds rational explanation. Fragments of testimonial accounts intertwine with Mann's reflections on art and his era, resulting in a multilayered scenic composition.
